Concrete Calculator
Work out how many cubic yards of concrete you need for a slab, floor, patio or pad.
How the math works
Concrete is ordered in cubic yards. Multiply length x width x thickness (all in feet) to get cubic feet, then divide by 27, because there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. Thickness is usually in inches, so divide it by 12 first.
Example: a 24 x 24 foot slab at 4 inches is 24 x 24 x 0.333 = 192 cubic feet, divided by 27 = about 7.1 cubic yards. With 10% extra, about 7.8 yards.
Why order extra
Bases are never perfectly flat, forms flex a little and some concrete stays in the chute. A small cushion keeps you from coming up short at the end of a pour, which is far worse than a little left over.
Footings and thickened edges
For a monolithic slab, figure the slab, then add the thickened edge as its own long, narrow piece: perimeter length x edge width x extra depth. Footings work the same way. For a big floor like the 60 yard barndominium floor we poured in Holland Patent, getting this right matters.
