Monolithic Slabs for Garages, Shops & Outbuildings
A monolithic slab is a footing and floor poured together in one pour, with thickened edges that carry the walls. It's a fast, solid foundation for garages, shops and outbuildings. We've poured them from Oxford to a 40 by 80 foot slab in North Norwich.
Recent monolithic slabs
- North Norwich: 40 by 80 feet. From prep to placement and finish,. See the project.
- Oxford. A monolithic slab plus a frost free hydrant installed for the owner. See the project.
How we build one
- Site and pad. Strip topsoil, grade, and build a compacted crushed stone pad with our own machines.
- Edges. Dig the perimeter for the thickened edge and set forms to line and level.
- Reinforcement. Steel in the edges and mesh or rebar in the field, as the plans call for.
- Pour and finish. One continuous pour, screeded flat and troweled. Big slabs get a pump and extra hands.
- Joints. Saw cut control joints on a grid.
Frost and code in Central NY
Frost is the big question with any shallow foundation up here. Depending on the building, whether it's heated and its size, your building department may require footings below frost depth, insulation to protect a shallow foundation, or allow a monolithic slab as drawn. We follow your plans and your code enforcement officer. Our monolithic slab guide explains the options.

What can go on a monolithic slab?
Detached garages, shops, pole buildings, sheds and other outbuildings are common. What's allowed for your building is up to your plans and local code.
How big a slab can you pour?
We poured a 40 by 80 foot slab in North Norwich. Big pours get a pump truck and a full crew.
Can you add utilities like a hydrant?
On the Oxford slab we also installed a frost free hydrant for the owner. Plumbing stubs and conduit need to be set before the pour, so plan them in early.
